Lisa Ling Interviews Delaware YMCA on Stewards of Children Training

In 2010, Delaware pediatrician Earl Bradley was convicted on 24 counts of child sexual abuse. Following many years of investigation and suspicion, Bradley was arrested after a 2-year old girl reported an incident to her parents. A subsequent police search recovered hours of videotape documenting over 10 years of abuse.  Bradley received a life sentence for his crimes, and in response to this issue, the State of Delaware created an initiative to train five percent of its population in child sexual abuse prevention. Home not a safe place for abused kids

Delaware State News by Craig Anderson DOVER — Earl Bradley and Jerry Sandusky are names the public recognizes as predators. But there are scores of less recognized names committing child abuse every day. And many are relatives or people who shares the homes of the children they are abusing. Children’s Advocacy Center of Delaware officials said these abusers account for nearly 85 percent of cases. Abuse scandals spur positive change

Before Jerry Sandusky grabbed headlines with allegations he’d sexually abused boys while Penn State University officials looked the other way, there were the headlines about pediatrician Earl Bradley, and questions about why years of complaints never revealed his sexual abuse of his patients. Time to talk about sex abuse. Recent high-profile cases raise awareness of what adults can do to help protect kids.

Sometime in 2009, a grand jury in Pennsylvania quietly began investigating child sexual abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky after a teen boy came forward to authorities and alleged the retired Penn State football coach touched him inappropriately over a four-year period. Later that same year in Delaware, Lewes pediatrician Earl Bradley was arrested on charges he sexually assaulted more than 100 patients, mostly girls younger than 3. Delaware Universities Taking Prevention Seriously!

Wilmington University, among other Universities in Delaware, have agreed to work with Darkness to Light’s Authorized Facilitators to train their faculty and staff in Stewards of Children.  The Athletics Department  at Wilmington University was among the first to get trained.  Next the public safety departments, education colleges and other general staff are getting trained. Delaware Higher Education Community Joins in the Fight to Protect Children

Delaware AG Biden Seeks Funding Support for Stewards

YMCA of Delaware will receive $300,000 to support “Stewards of Children Sexual Child Abuse Prevention.”

The Delaware Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling $220,000 to three statewide, multi-agency initiatives to expand mentoring, reduce child sexual abuse and empower financially vulnerable Delawareans. The DCF’s collaborative grant program seeks to fund initiatives in which multiple nonprofit agencies work together to maximize their collective capabilities and provide powerful services to Delawareans statewide. Every three years, the DCF solicits applications and selects one or more initiatives to fund for the subsequent three years. Grant money comes from the earnings of the DCF’s unrestricted fund. …
