A Strong Finish to Child Abuse Prevention Month

Inspector: No sign of investigation in 1,111 New Orleans sex crime-related calls

Excerpt from CNN.com The report is full of harrowing details alleging that five New Orleans Police Department detectives in the special victims unit may have failed to investigate sex crimes over a three-year period. But one case stands out. According to the seven-page document released Wednesday by the city’s Office of Inspector General, a 2-year-old was brought to a hospital emergency room after an alleged sexual assault. Tulane University’s Sigma Delta Tau Sorority Doing Their Part to End CSA!

On January 9th – philanthropy day, Tulane University’s Sigma Delta Tau Sorority members became Darkness to Light Stewards of Children!  The New Orleans Children’s Advocacy Center trained 111 active members of their chapter!  They have committed all new members to be trained and in February hope to become a Partner in Prevention! One step closer to ending child sexual abuse!

NOCAC receives $4,700 Wal-Mart grant to train employees in CSA prevention

Pictured right Derrick Edwards, manager of the New Orleans Tchopitoulous Wal-Mart  presenting the New Orleans Childrens Advocacy Center (NOCAC)  a check for  $4,700 as part of a Wal-Mart Associates Choice foundation grant to The Childrens Advocacy Centers of Louisiana.   All 480 employees at the Tchopitoulous Wal-Mart will be trained in Stewards of Children.  Way to go NOCAC and Wal-Mart.  Now that’s partnering in prevention!

The Heroes Amoung Us!

Adults came from throughout Louisiana to join in the annual training and conference entitled “The Heroes Among Us!” headed by Peggy Kirby. The Louisiana Foster and Adoptive Parent Association (LAFAPA) recently held its annual conference and training at Embassy Suites in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This training was attended by over 350 foster families, foster youth, adoptive parents, child protestion staff, and other professionals to learn more about protecting children. The Baton Rouge Advocate runs a great feature on Stewards of Children

A recent article in the Baton Rouge Advocate profiled the Stewards of Children program and highlighted the work of one group working in the community to prevent child sexual abuse. A prevention movement taking root in Louisiana

Child sexual abuse prevention training has been ongoing in Louisiana for some time through the work of a few dedicated professionals throughout the state.  But with the recent addition of community awareness meetings and the formation of a coalition more adults are being trained than ever.  Case in point, a principal with Bridgetown Elementary School in Metairie who attended a meeting, committed to training all of the school faculty.  The training took place on Tuesday, January 4th and was covered by The Times Picayune.  Click here …
