Lisa Ling Interviews Delaware YMCA on Stewards of Children Training

In 2010, Delaware pediatrician Earl Bradley was convicted on 24 counts of child sexual abuse. Following many years of investigation and suspicion, Bradley was arrested after a 2-year old girl reported an incident to her parents. A subsequent police search recovered hours of videotape documenting over 10 years of abuse.  Bradley received a life sentence for his crimes, and in response to this issue, the State of Delaware created an initiative to train five percent of its population in child sexual abuse prevention. Delaware Universities Taking Prevention Seriously!

Wilmington University, among other Universities in Delaware, have agreed to work with Darkness to Light’s Authorized Facilitators to train their faculty and staff in Stewards of Children.  The Athletics Department  at Wilmington University was among the first to get trained.  Next the public safety departments, education colleges and other general staff are getting trained. The state of Delaware takes child protection seriously.  That is why community leaders- the Attorney General’s office, PCA Delaware, Delaware YMCA and the Delaware CAC- have come together with a goal to train 35,000 adults. Delaware AG Biden Seeks Funding Support for Stewards

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden asked the legislature’s budget-writing committee today to approve funding for training 10,000 adults to recognize the signs of child abuse and report it to authorities.  Biden made his request for $60,000 for the Stewards of Children program during the Department of Justice’s annual Joint Finance Committee hearing.   “It is not a child’s job to protect him or herself from abuse, that is our job as adults,” Biden said.  “When 90 percent of abused kids are victimized by someone they …

Recent AP article highlights the D2L/YMCA community prevention efforts

The Associated Press published an article over the weekend about the child protection efforts by national youth serving organizations including the YMCA.  The article specifically mentions the work local YMCAs are doing to increase awareness and educate adults in the community.
