Challenge Made Easy(er) with D2L

By Kate Nyquist, Education Services Manager, Center for Child Protection, Austin, TX “Could I please get a volunteer to stand up and tell us about your last sexual experience?” This is typically the way I grab the attention of those who aren’t yet willing to make eye contact with me during the difficult subject matter of child sexual abuse in community trainings. Of course I never get volunteers but it helps push everyone’s discomfort so far that the group dynamics inevitably turn to laughter. As always demonstrated by …

The Perfect Size to Protect Children

I grew up in a small Southeast Texas city of 11,000 people. For most of my life, I attended services at Pine Forest Baptist Church, the church my great-grandmother helped found and where three generations of my family were married. I now reside in South Carolina, but when I return home, I make sure my trip includes a Sunday so that I can visit my family church and see childhood friends along with church members who’ve known me since I was born. One of my …

Mandated Reporting: Positive Step? Yes. Solution? No.

The San Jose Mercury recently published an article about potential child sexual abuse (CSA) at the Lescher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, California. The concept of CSA is disturbing in and of itself, but what is most upsetting about this story is the complete confusion of key personnel on how to respond to a history of alleged incidents and report them to the appropriate authorities. From the article: The community services director “told (a Walnut Creek police sergeant) he was completely unaware of …

Prioritizing Child Sexual Abuse Prevention

N.Y. – Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards believes child abuse training should be a priority. Edwards recently visited Jamestown’s Child Advocacy Program to sign up for Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children™ child sexual abuse prevention training. Under the facilitation of Jana McDermott, CAP offers regular sessions, with scholarships available for those who may find cost to be a prohibitive factor. Edwards had this to say about the training: “All you’re asking from me is three hours. Here’s what’s running through my head, then: If …

Teaching my first “Stewards of Children” class

On Thursday, February 28th, I facilitated my first Stewards of Children training for the staff of Central Bucks Family YMCA. Stewards of Children is an awareness program for adults that teaches them to recognize, prevent and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. As I setup for the training, I was very much aware that with the statistic of “1 in 4 girls” and “1 in 6 boys” having been sexually abused before age 18, I could possibly have staff in the training who have had some experience with child …
