Greater Lowell Y team up with community leaders to fight abuse

On March 24, about 70 community leaders, including state legislators, Greater Lowell municipal and school officials, and members of the YMCA board of directors, trustees and leadership staff, gathered at the Greater Lowell Family YMCA to learn about the Stewards of Children program. 

Chelmsford, so far, has been the first to sign on to the Stewards program, and it will soon have 8 facilitators trained to help educate schools, sports leagues, day-care centers, and more.  The Lowell City Council also has voted to adopt the program.

New steps in DE efforts to end abuse

The state of Delaware takes child protection seriously.  That is why community leaders- the Attorney General's office, PCA Delaware, Delaware YMCA and the Delaware CAC- have come together with a goal to train 35,000 adults.

A special task force is expected to release its recommendations today that address child mental health needs in the fight against child sexual abuse. 

"The more people who know how child sexual abuse can be prevented, the harder it's going to be for perpetrators to be able to take advantage of our children," said Karen DeRasmo, executive director of PCA Delaware.

Melrose YMCA continues to shine the light on child sexual abuse prevnetion

Three years ago the community of Melrose, MA was rocked by a child sex abuse scandal when a beloved community member pleaded guilty to 20 charges of sexual abuse.  Since that time, the YMCA of Melrose, who has now merged with the Greater Lynn YMCA, and the community have been focused on training their community members in what to look for and how to prevent this situation from happening again.

The Heroes Amoung Us!

Adults came from throughout Louisiana to join in the annual training and conference entitled "The Heroes Among Us!" headed by Peggy Kirby. The Louisiana Foster and Adoptive Parent Association (LAFAPA) recently held its annual conference and training at Embassy Suites in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This training was attended by over 350 foster families, foster youth, adoptive parents, child protestion staff, and other professionals to learn more about protecting children. Child Safety & Protection Collaborative of Centre County

"Centre County, PA leaders say child sexual abuse is not a matter of awareness-it is a matter of action."  That is why community leaders are partnering with Darkness to Light to teach adults how to better protect children in their community.

The recently formed Child Safety and Protection Collaborative- consisting of members from the YMCA, Youth Service Bureau, United Way, and Women's Resource Center- are bringing together community members to be trained as facilitators of the Darkness to Light program. 

The Collaborative hopes to hold a facilitator workshop in the next few months along with increasing public awareness, increasing risk reduction, strengthening
