PA YMCAs working to end child sexual abuse

YMCA of Reading & Berks County take child protection seriously, which is why they have spent the last 4 months training 357 of its staff, board, and volunteers in Stewards of Children. Now the Y is ready to send their facilitators out in the community to deliver prevention training to churches, schools, businesses, and others across the county. The Reading & Berks County Y is part of the PA YMCA State Alliance that is working together to train adults how to prevent child sexual abuse. So far 20 to 25 of the 70 PA state YMCA associations have a trained facilitator, and the goal is to reach all YMCAs in PA over the next 2 years. As Kim Johnson, YMCA President and CEO, says, “Child sexual abuse is the most under-reported crime in the United States. That is why I think it is so important for the YMCA to get involved.”
